HustleCo is hosting a conference dedicated towards coffee. Coffee is the fuel that keeps us hustling hard as entrepreneurs so we’ve decided to organize and host a half-day conference and seminar dedicated to all things coffee. Coffee lovers, drinkers, roasters, coffee shop owners and the like, are all invited to attend and purchase tickets to this mini conference and seminar. HustleCo members are entitled to a 50% discount on the ticket price of this event.
11am – 12:30pm: Tasting Session and Networking
We will kick off the day with a tasting session of various local coffee providers and roasters in Calgary. We will be sampling 6 different types of coffee bean and roast (Arabica, Robusta, Dark and Light) from 3 different craft roasters in Calgary. The method of preparation for each type of coffee will be both: French-Press and American Drip (or pour-over) to compare the two common preparation methods that are simple to do at home.
12:30 – 1:15: History/Economics of Coffee – by Steve Paolasini (Coffee aficionado and history buff)
Steve will outline the history here of coffee and how it became Canada’s most consumed beverage (after water). He will go into detail about the history of how it got its name, how it was discovered, and the history of its cultivation. Where did it originate, where is it most consumed these days, and what is the market outlook for coffee?
1:15 – 2:00: Coffee/Lunch Break
We will offer a catered lunch here from our friends at a local catering company.
2:00 – 2:45: Preparation Methods – Husam Al-rameeni (Master Chef Al-rameeni)
Hailing from none other than the coffee capital in the Middle East, Husam will be presenting the various preparation methods of coffee that exist today. Husam will break down the difference between Turkish, Arabic, and Saudi Arabian coffee while venturing into newer methods such as the Espresso technique, French press, American drip, pourover, and percolation. He will talk about and you will learn how you can prepare the best cup of Java from any place in the world in your own home here in Canada.
2:45 – 3:00: Arabic Coffee Preparation Demonstration
Husam will be doing a brief demonstration (including samples!) on how to prepare Arabic coffee, Jordanian style.
3:00 – 4:00: Cultivation, Grading and Roasting – Lilian Nkirote (Honoured Guest and Feature Speaker)
Lilian is visiting from Kenya; one of the largest coffee exporting countries in the world. She owns a farm in Kenya and is experienced in the agricultural techniques to cultivate coffee in both Arabica and Robusta varieties. She is familiar with the home roasting techniques in true Kenyan tradition. Lilian will also be bringing some raw (green bean) coffee from her farm and neighbouring farms in Kenya that she will be giving each attendee a sample to take home to try home roasting for themselves. Of course, we will be sampling some of Lilian’s coffee, straight from the highlands in Kenya.
4:00 – 5:00: Closing remarks and Q & A
Any questions you have for our panel of speakers will be answered and if you choose to drink some more coffee at this hour, you are more than welcome to!
